Mayhem 1: Race report.

Two sets of Rollers. Two Racers. One big black Clock.

A slurry of fixie riders, track racers, roadies, posers, and super hero’s descended upon the Winchester – public house and former Masonic lodge on St. Benedicts Street, Newton last Wednesday night for the first of the Mayhem Sessions.

There was a little apprehension in eyes of the first-up racers. Terror soon turned to delight once the crowd started cheering with the clock ticking off the yards to greatness.

Andy Williams from Calibre took first place in the ‘Fast-Rollin Free-for-All’ (riding his sisters bike and wearing his mums holographic green lamé skin suit). Punters tip: Look out for Skid Kid Brendon Vandenbosch who rode into the semi’s on his fantastically under-geared fixie. There will be trouble if he gets on anything that’s near the regulation 96.4 inches.

The Super Elite Invitational Classic saw Ron King (ex Italian pro) pitted against Olympic and Commonwealth games athlete Ric Reid, while 13 time national track champ Justin Grace took on Colin Cornberg, the young mechanic from Cyco. Tyres blew, riders fell, cleats popped and the indomitable Justin Grace rode to glory in the shadow of the big black clock.

The Mayhem Sessions run every Wednesday night in August, including a special women’s competition on the 20th. From 7pm at the Winchester on St. Benedict’s Street, Newton. BYO bike and beer money. Thanks to various friends for the photos.
